Kelly believes that everyone is a scientist; we formulate hypothesis and test it out in the real world. Maria, however, acted like a scientist when she was making a decision about whether her third child should be born vaginally or through C-section. Upon making her decision, she did a lot of research and read the pros and cons about C-section. In addition to looking up information, she also consulted her doctor to make her decision based on facts and professional opinion. Looking back at her decision, she was reassured of her choice and was glad that she decided a C-section. Another evidence of Maria’s scientific skill was when she discovered that making things into games would enable her children to cooperate more with her.
2. One of Maria’s and Carlos’s important personal construct is being a parent and spouse. This is acknowledged when they discussed about having a family before marriage. They discovered that being married and having children was a priority. They believed that being a parent was fun and that playing and caring for the child’s needs are equally important. They were willing to change their ideas about what parenting was when they had their first child. They changed their constructs according to their new experience, which was having a child. They learned that parenting was not just doing more, but is was also doing less activities on their own because of the child. Maria also showed modulation in her techniques in getting her children to do what she wanted them to do. She understood that just telling them was not enough, she had to invent games so that they would cooperate with her. Both Carlos and Maria realized that good parenting means changing.
