Revenge is a strong urge that shouldn't be acted upon because of the consequences. Understanding the influence of emotion and thought on human behavior is important for coming up with solutions to problems. Karyn Hall writes about, and goes in-depth about the topic of revenge. Revenge is self-destructive, yet it is still a part of everyday life. One theory about the purpose of revenge is to prevent certain hostile actions.
The novel Alandra’s Lilacs, by Tressa Bowers, tells the story of a Deaf woman, Alandra, and her mother Tressa. The story begins before Alandra was born and tells Tressa’s narative up to Alandra’s adulthood. Throughout the book, the reader sees the challenges that come with having a deaf child. We see both the achievements and setbacks faced by Alandra and her mother. Although being deaf may seem like a misfortune to most, Tressa reveals her experiences with Deaf culture and seeing deafness in a new light.
In the short story “Marigolds”, by Eugenia W. Collier, the marigolds, which symbolize hope, convey the theme that everything isn’t always easy but don’t give up hope and keep trying. The setting of the story takes place in a poor Maryland city during the Great Depression. Lizabeth is trying to find out who she is when her parents have a loud conversation about their problems, causing Lizabeth to go destroy Miss Lottie’s marrigolds. In the beginning, Lizabeth says how she feels about the marrigolds: “For some peverse reason, we children hated those marigolds. They interfered with the perfect ugliness of the place; they were too beautiful; they did not make sense.”
In Marigolds by Eugenia Coller, Lizabeth lost her innocence when she was almost 15 years old. It was her first time seeing her dad cry. Lisabeth got upset and destroyed Miss Lottie’s marigolds. When she had realized what she had done, that was the moment when she felt that she was growing up from a young girl into adulthood.
The theme of the short story,” Marigolds” by Eugenia Collier is that in a ugly situation there is something positive within. In the text the author states ” Beyond the dusty brown yard, in a dazzling strip of bright blossoms, clumped together in enormous mounds, warm and passionate and sun-golden”(Collier 164-167). This shows that these marigolds were the only beauty sticking out of the ugly field of Miss Lottie. This matters to the setting because within the dusty brown field there was marigolds which were bright and beautiful meaning there is something positive. Another piece that proves this is” she had nothing except for a falling down hut, a wrecked body, and John Burke, the mindless son of her passion.

She owned the most run-down house in the town, along with having a mentally disabled son. To her, the beauty of the marigolds lighten and bring colors to the ugly surroundings. Despite how desperate times are, Miss Lottie still enjoys painstaking the breathtaking yellow flowers that washed her worries away.

Revenge is the action or infliction of harm towards someone who has wronged a person or someone they know. Revenge triggers and some do not understand the full effect it plays. Revenge hurts all involved including the innocent, is a theme to both Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet and the 1961 movie West Side Story; however, the two works separate by expressing different plots. I believe this theme exists in both of the works because both have characters who seek revenge and in the process hurt the innocent. For example in the conflict of Romeo and Juliet revenge is shown by Romeo and leads to discomfort for himself.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition of revenge is “to inflict injury in return for.” In To Kill a Mockingbird (TKAM) by Harper Lee, Scout, and Jem explore Civil Rights and racism in the segregated Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s. Expressed through the eyes of 7-year-old, you learn about her father Atticus Finch, an attorney who desperately tries to prove the innocence of a black man falsely accused of rape; and about Boo Radley, a mysterious neighbor who saves Scout and Jem from being slaughtered by Bob Ewell. In the scene when Jem and Scout are attacked by Bob Ewell, Lee develops the theme, revenge brings consequences through external conflict, and symbolism. Seeking destructive revenge always creates a larger issue.
Revenge can be a horrible emotion; it can sometimes lead people to do horrible things. By definition, Revenge means to get retribution for a wrongdoing done to you. In my opinion, revenge is mostly caused by fear and the overwhelming feeling of payback Throughout history, revenge, or vengeance, has been altered by several cultures and religions, and even the American culture. Though it often leads one to perform criminal acts, Howard argues that it is a necessary component in the functioning of society. He points out that revenge is a threat that acts as a disincentive to undeserved violence.
Revenge is a real thing in today’s society. It happens every day. There are different reasons for revenge from as small, as a small child stealing a stick of gum to a drug dealer murdering a nark. Regardless, taking revenge in itself may be for the greater good, or evil.
