The book Schooled, by Gordan Korman is about a hippie named Capricorn Anderson, or “Cap” who gets thrown into a situation where he is out of his element and that he is not prepared to handle. Cap goes through middle school with no clue on what to do. Cap lived on a secluded farm with only his grandmother because Cap’s parents had died in the Peace Corp in New Guinea. One day, his grandmother fell out of a plum tree where she was picking plums, and broke her hip and had to be in rehab for eight weeks.
Cutterham’s essay, Students are Anything but Coddled, is effective because it uses classroom dynamics and university protests. Cutterham uses examples of how students are changing the dynamic in clasrooms and on campuses through social media and protests and argues that students are not soft and pampered. In his essay, Cutterham uses the example of protesting students to show that today’s students are not “coddled”. He uses an example of Naimh McIntyre.
Summary In chapter three “In the defense of a Liberal Education” author Fareed Zakaria opens up what he believes to be “central virtue of liberal education”(72). He writes that it teaches one how to think critically and clearly. He explains that thinking is the stronger advantage one could have in writing well. Before writing it helps first people to think in a critical sense so work should be using simple language in a well comprehendible way.
Higher education is important to most people, but there are times where it does not take priority. One major issue talked about by Magdalena Kay in “A New Course” is that teachers are teaching to the state test, and not to teach students knowledge. There are two perspectives in this article: one is from Magdalena Kay, an associate professor of English at the University of Victoria, and the other is Christopher Lasch. Christopher Lasch is a historian and a social critic, who does not have an inside sight into the educational system. Lasch is only able to express the perspective of an outsider, unlike Kay who has an insight because she is in the educational system.

Alfred Lubrano the author of “the shock of Education: How college Corrupts” explains the differences and difficulties of what students can go through while they are in college. Lubrano says that when a student arrives at college, they lose their connection to their families. This is due to the extreme workload put on the student by the professors they don’t have the time to really chat with their parents like they used to when they lived at home. Also if there is an enormous distance gap where the students go to college and where their parents live it may create that sense like they don’t know each other anymore. I agree do with Alfred that college students change once they go to college they start grow apart from their families.
Today’s college students are becoming more sensitized to the harshness of the outside world. Instead of learning to be resilient to others’ comments, they are being taught to take offense to any little word that could in some way be connected with a bad experience they might have had, and college administrators and professors are aiding this childish behavior. They are backing this movement to make adults into children. With this new movement to rid college campuses of any speech that may make anyone feel uncomfortable, students are being treated less like adults, and more like elementary children.

Whalen gears this argumentative article towards the liberal art supporters, and towards those who oppose against it and believe that liberal arts are not important. This article is argumentative because the author goes back and forth explaining the thoughts about liberal arts from both points of view. The benefits of allowing both perspective and thoughts in the article is to show that there is contrast dealing with liberal arts and a person can choose for themselves on which side to agree with. Giving the reader a choice to understand both sides of a debate leads to a person becoming more interesting in knowing more about the argument.
