A portrait of Mark Twain
Samuel Clemens or as many people know for his pseudonym Mark Twain was known for his work of literacy. His biggest achievements in literacy were the work of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Mark Twain’s first achievement happened in 1865, in literacy when he wrote The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County (“Mark Twain” 23). He was considered one of the best authors of his time and his stories became a huge part of the literature world. Before Twain became a well known author his life was a difficult but throughout his journey many factors influenced him to be the person he was. There were social, economic, and cultural influences on Mark Twain which affected his lifetime achievements.

He met an abundance of men and women who helped change his perspective on life. In Angels Camp, Twain met a man by the name of Ben Coon who inspired his first work of literacy. Ben Coon, an examiner’s story about a jumping frog fascinated Twain, he later began working on the Jumping Frog story (Cox 78). While aboard a ship he met Charles Langdon. “Though, Twain didn't know it yet, “Charley” would turn out to be one of the most important people in his life” (Cox 93). Charles turned out to be the brother of the woman Mark would marry soon after towards. After being friends with Charles, Twain met his future wife Olivia “Livy” Langdon, who was an abolitionist.
