Most people know of Mark Twain, the famous writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. Born on November 30, 1835, Twain became one of the most known American writer. He died on April 21, 1910. Mark Twain did many things, but why is he so admired by all, what is it that made him famous, and what happened to lead him to become the great man he was?
Before he changed his name, Mark Twain's name was, in fact, not Mark Twain. His full name was Samuel Clemens. Not only was he an author, but he was a "riverboat pilot, journalist, lecturer, entrepreneur and inventor"(Biography.com). At age 12, with his father dead, he stopped schooling and got a job as an apprentice printer. At age 15, he was doing a little writing as well. The story that jumpstarted his writing his career was Sam's story, "The Jumping Frog." His short story appeared in the last number of "The Saturday Press." That story was one of his first successes as an author. Samuel was a very honest man. He wanted everyone to know how everything really happened. There were many controversial opinions on "The Adventures of Hucklberry Finn", but it still continues to be very popular in the literature world. He has written many books that have become very popular, including "Roughing It", "The Gilded Age", and "Autobiography of Mark Twain". Because Samuel had very little schooling as a child, he spent many nights in the library educating himself. One of Mark Twain's most famous quotes was "The secret to getting ahead is getting started"(Mark Twain Quotes).
