Have you ever counted on an individual to be closer to you compared to someone biological? Biological means for individuals being related by DNA. However, just because you have the same blood running through your veins, it does not mean you guys have the same mindset or need to stick together. In the novel ‘The Marrow Thieves', written by Cherie Dimaline, is about how a boy named Frenchie who lost his biological family, and struggled to survive, found himself a different family that was all connected since they all lost their loved ones. This story shows how without family they will not learn and grow, having family ensures they have their culture with them which is what helps them achieve their goal of survival. The theme in Marrow Thieves is family is by choice not by blood. This is developed by how the chosen family mourns from loved ones death, connection towards the chosen family, and not leaving each other behind.
The first way the theme is how they mourn from loved ones death as if they are a biological family. This is shown by the chosen family member’s reactions to RiRi’s death. In chapter 16, ‘The Long Stumble’, Frenchies narrates how the chosen family members' reaction to RiRi’s death were. “By evening we were exhausted. We’d run and mourn for hours, each one of us crying out when the image of RiRi came to mind”. “By evening we were exhausted”, shows that they were mentally tired because of what happened to RiRi, she plays such an important part of their lives they can’t imagine what type of life they will live without RiRi. In chapter 17, ‘Rogarou comes Hunting’, Frenchie is not going north the way they all were meant to go, instead he said “I’m going after Minerva ''. Not going North is a big deal, that was their plan the whole time, it was safe for them and it is their dream to get there safely. Going back to Minerva shows how much she matters to the chosen family. Minerva is a big part of their family, she helped everyone learn and was the only one that knew their language. Minerva helped the family to stay alive, their family was held together by her and Miig. Why would the kids leave Minerva when she helped them during their hard times? Without her the family would be incomplete, they need each other to stay alive. Minerva was always there for support, she helped them through life it is important to not leave her since no one should leave family ever. Leaving Minerva behind shows that they don’t care for Minerva, and that she does not matter to them to the point that they would do anything for her. Instead it shows how they care for Minerva to the point that they will go to any length to ensure that Minerva is going to be safe and be with her family, the chosen family. Family should always be there to help,
