As you read books, you will always come across the most hostile character. In this story called Maniac Magee, by Jerry Spinelli, Mars Bar is the most hostile character that you will come across. In this story, the author Jerry Spinelli created the character Mars Bar. Mars Bar has the role of bullying Maniac Magee, or Jeffery Magge. Jeffery is a 12 year old who has lost his parents at a young age, trying to find a place to call “home”. In Maniac Magee, the setting is Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania is divided into two. One side is the West End, where white people live, and the other is East End, where black people live. When Maniac Magee crosses into the East End, Mars Bar comes into the story. Jerry adds Mars Bar to show racial differences because Mars Bar bullies Maniac because he is white. Mars Bar bullies Maniac by being hostile to him. He is hostile by writing “FISHBELLY GO HOME” on the Amanda Beale’s house (Amanda Beale is friends with Maniac, even though Amanda is black and Maniac is white), ripping a page from Amanda Beale’s book, and calling Maniac “fishbelly” in general. …show more content…

When Maniac was going home, he finds Mrs. Beale washing off “FISHBELLY GO HOME” on the side of the Beale’s house, and he knew that Mars Bar wrote it there for him to find. (Pg. 56) Based on the quote, Mars Bar was hostile to Maniac by hurting his feelings. Mars Bar bullies Maniac because he is not the same race and tries to ruin his day. Mars Bar wrote “FISHBELLY GO HOME” on the side of the Beale’s house, knowing he was hostile. Mars Bar was hostile when he ripped a page from Amanda’s book. Mars Bar was telling Maniac to give him back the book when he found him in the East End and ended up ripping a page out. (Pg. 35) According to the quote, he is trying to steal and possess other people's belongings.
