Personality – The combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual’s distinctive character (Own Definition).
The set of emotional qualities, ways of behaving that makes a person different from other people. (wiki-answers.com).
Personality shows different qualities that people have and its shown in certain situations what type of person you are (own definition).

Marten’s schematic view of personality
There are three levels that describe a person’s personality on marten’s view. These are; The Psychological core, Typical Responses and Role Related Behaviour. These three will be described in the below in detail.

An example of this would be Jessica Ennis as she is shy and quiet off the track but when on the track, her typical response is to be focused and determined.

Role related behaviour: This level identifies how people change their behaviour to fit in to specific situations, we adapt our personalities to suit a specific situation. An example of this would be Greg Rutherford as his response on winning is to celebrate and be proud, however when he won his gold medal at the Olympics, the situation took over and Rutherford changed his personality which resulted in the athlete becoming more of an …show more content…

However, non-athletes don’t like to be competitive and being involved in a sporting environment because they don’t like the attention meaning they are more likely to be an introvert. Athletes competing on a world wide televised event are being watched all around the world by millions of people, they achieve money, fame and achievements which pushes them to be more successful. Non-athletes/introverts do not like this meaning they will not put themselves in these type of situations.
Individual sports consist of athletes that are more intrinsically motivated as they don’t thrive of success by the fame or the atmosphere around them because they have a quiet personality and are driven to success from within themselves. These types of athletes build confidence by using techniques such as self-talk and imagery.
Team sports players are generally extroverts and would use external motivation to reach their goals as people in the team will have the same willingness to
