Martin Luther King Day is a American National holiday. It is celebrated on the third Monday of January and we celebrate it around his birthday which is January 15. King was the spokesman for a national rights movement, which protested in federal and state law. The idea of MLK day was promoted by labor unions in contract negotiations. The first bill came to vote in the U.S House of Representatives in the year 1979. However it was 5 votes away for passage for a national holiday. At first some states rejected the idea, then as time goes on all fifty states agreed to have MLK day for a national holiday.
