Peaceful resistance to laws positively impacts a free society. I believe that if there is a law which infringes on an individuals rights or expressly oppresses an individual or group of individuals the law is unjust. “An unjust law is no law at all” – Martin Luther King Peaceful resistance to unjust laws can bring about real change in a free society. Martin Luther King Jr. demonstrated this perfectly. All of his protests, were peaceful, they hurt no one but showed that he and his followers refused to be oppressed and treated differently than their white counterparts. The will of the people will eventually become the law of the people. Peaceful protest is an effective mechanism for showing and imposing the will of the people. Martin Luther King Jr explained his reasoning for peaceful protests and other variations of peaceful disobedience in his Letter from Birmingham Jail. In this letter he states "It seeks so to dramatize the issue that it can no longer be ignored." It is impossible for the government to ignore the people and their will when they come together in protest, peaceful protest will be covered in the media thus giving it more exposure and appeal. MLK further made his movement impossible to ignore by giving his most famous speech entitled "I Have a Dream." This speech drew massive exposure and sympathy to his movement.
