In the TED Talks video, Martin Seligman points out just how much psychology today is “not good enough”. By this Seligman means that psychologists have been primarily dedicating everything to addressing mental illness rather than the mental wellness of an individual. In order to address this issue, Seligman was one of the founders of “positive psychology” or the study of the strengths that an individual or community possesses to thrive for greatness. The positive psychology movement has grown, since first being introduced by Seligman, into its very own vast study.

To gain a better understanding of the positive psychology movement, one must first understand what exactly is wrong with psychology. As researchers, psychologists focus more on the mental illnesses that occur in the brain and not the overall condition of the brain and how it feels. In order to help fix or maybe even change this in a way where one can say that psychology is getting better, three goals were set for the positive psychology movement. For one, Seligman would like for psychology as a whole to focus more on strengths rather than the feebleness of the brain and what breaks it down. The second goal is for psychologists to focus more on building or strengthening the best things in life rather than repairing the things that are already past the state of repair. Seligman is basically saying that psychology should focus more on the normal people that have a chance of happiness and not on those who have no chance of happiness without a professionals help. It is a very confusing topic, but in a nutshell it is an amazing study. Happiness is needed universally and has become a lackluster topic in the field of psychology.
