Martin Seligman's Well-Being Theory Of Happiness

In the book Flourish, Martin Seligman suggests that well-being theory cannot be defined by a single element. However, each element contributes to the theory, which some aspects can be measured subjectively and others objectively. Well-being theory is the evolved theory from authentic happiness theory which states the happiness is measured by life satisfactions. Although life satisfaction is part of the elements that determines happiness, it is not the complete definition of positive psychology. Well-being theory is made by five elements: positive emotion, engagement, meaning, positive relationships, and accomplishment (Seligman, 2011). Whereas authentic happiness theory is made by the measurement of life satisfaction. The different elements and measurement that these two theories have further determine their own way of approaching the definition of positive psychology, increase life satisfaction or increase flourishing. It is also the cornerstone of positive psychology. Positive emotion is to take all things together and identify one on how happy they think they are. Although positive emotion is similar to the satisfaction of authentic theory, it is not how people’s happiness are only determined by. Positive emotions are retrospective, however, people’s happiness level are not only determined by the present emotional state, flow state. For example, food can be one of the life satisfaction to give one positive emotion. Although food can make one happy, this does not determine one’s happiness state all the time. Therefore, authentic happiness theory is not as well-constructed as well-being theory because it only states how the subjective side of achieving
