Pope Benedict XVI explains that “Mary bears him in her womb as in a sacred tabernacle and offers him as the greatest gift to Zechariah, to Elizabeth, his wife, and also to the infant developing in her womb.” Archbishop Fulton Sheen said that Mary was the first person who received Holy Communion. At the annunciation, Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38). Immediately, “the Word was made flesh and tabernacle within Mary.” Therefore, “Mary is the tabernacle of the Lord.” Sheen also took the event of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth to explain that John the Baptist jumped in his mother’s womb when he met Jesus in Mary’s womb.
