Character Analysis over Mary Maloney “It’s the old story. Get the weapon, and you’ve go the man.” Mrs. Maloney seems like a very normal character, who is very predictable, however, it turns out that she is the very opposite. Mary turns out to be nothing like what you expected in the beginning. Mary goes from being very caring and loving, to being crafty and maternal, to finally being manipulative and victorious. Throughout the beginning of the story, Mary shows the reader how much she truly cares and loves her husband. She constantly asked Patrick Maloney if there is anything she can get him. She offered to get him his slippers, cheese, and also on crackers. Without even asking Patrick, Mary made him a strong drink, just to make him happy. Usually the two of them will go out to dinner, but Patrick was so tired Mrs. Maloney offered to make him supper instead, because she cared about him so much. The sides of her they now see are her being very maternal and crafty. She originally showed her craftsmanship when, she stroke her husband with a leg of a lamb that, was supposed to be their dinner. She does as much as possible to protect her unborn child, showing that she is maternal. To protect the baby, she does not confess to murder, incase that they not only killed her but the baby too. She continues to show the readers her crafty side when she begins to look for alibis, at the grocery store. That is not something the reader would have originally thought Mrs. Maloney would do. Mary prepares herself to act like nothing has happened when she returns from the grocery store, which is also a very smart thing to do so anyone around does not suspect Mary of the
