. She does not treat the black servants well so they decide to leave the job . Several servants come and go because she abuses them. Mary's life becomes miserable. The writer shows the bad , furious , and angry side of Mary's character as a result of her life in poverty with Dick in South Africa . Mary's life with Dick was full of sense of hopelessness and despair . Mary expresses her anger caused by her hard life with Dick through humiliating and torturing the natives . She makes them work harder, reduces their break time , and takes money from their pay. She does not give them food and She always accuses them of stealing . Mary abhors the natives . "She hated their half-naked ,thick -muscled black bodies stooping in the mindless rhythem of their work. S he hated their sullenness , their averted eyes when they spoke to her , their veiled insolence , and she hated more than anything ,with violent physical repulsion, the heavy smell that came from them , a hot , sour animal smell ". She is afraid of the native and She tries to make them see She is the boss and She is the master and they are just slaves . Mary abuses her servants . "two thirds of the African stories are about the personal lives of the white settlers , with the native in the back ground " (Thrope 39 ). The major focus in The Grass is Singing is on Mary's life while the native black's life is of a little importance as they come in the back ground . For the white man , They are just slaves and servants . The characters in the novel are real-life characters. "The protagonist s of her novel are embodiments of every person " (Gold Farb 147 ), as the character of Mary was the presentation of the racist white people at that time
