From the portrayal of Achilles as a flawed and complex character, Troy contradicts traditional Greek notions of heroism and masculinity by emphasizing Achilles’ vulnerability and solidarity over stoic bravery. This does not indulge the importance of a heroic identity, including emotional and psychological complexity in the ancient Greco world. Wolfgang Peterson directed Troy in 2004 and took his own spin on the character Achilles, providing a new perspective of what a “hero” is. Peterson’s new personality of Achilles was part of a modernized hero epidemic, which had distinct differences from the classic Greco hero. The heroes were often portrayed as large people and embodied the ideals of heroism, courage, masculinity, and honor. The Greek Tragedy plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euphides show the use of heroism and masculinity to their fullest. For example, we see Agamemnon willingly sacrificing his own daughter for the sake of the country, outlining his loyalty and “heroism” of the past time (GreekMythology.com, 2018). These heroes were closely celebrated and worshipped and are still known today. This shows the power that the Greek heroes held. Whether their stories were true or not, they still inspired more than generation after generation. These heroes may not have the cults they once had, but fandom still exists today and continues to shape people's lives.
