The use of heroes in stories has been around since ancient times. Heroes were first used as superhumans with abilities like none other. For thousands of years, the same general outline of plot has been used for these stories, sometimes making the unseen stories almost too predictable. The story of Theseus in Edith Hamilton’s Mythology, is an example of a hero’s story. It’s main premise is the idea that a hero is able to help rescue a society that is oppressed because of its unnecessarily harsh lifestyles.
People around the world have heard of many heroes of Greek mythology and know of their adventures. Although the stories and myths of each hero slightly vary from place to place and person to person, the great feats that each has accomplished are common knowledge. One of the most accomplished heroes of Greek mythology is Theseus, the hero of Athens. This hero started with humble beginnings and eventually grew to be the most famous and respected demigod in ancient Athens (Ward, 7). Theseus’ mother, Aethra, was a princess and the daughter of Pittheus, the king of Troezen.
A hero is someone who is revered for his or her exceptional achievements and bravery. Anyone who puts themselves before others not for recognition or an award, but because it is the right thing to do, is a true hero. In "The Odyssey," written by Homer is an epic poem about a man named Odysseus and his crewmates competing against the power of the gods to return to their homeland, Ithaca. Throughout his journey, he loses almost all of his men, but Odysseus finally arrives home, concluding his prolonged twenty-year voyage. Odysseus must battle the suitors that have taken his wife Penelope, and may soon kill his son Telemachus.
Theseus More than Just a Hero When someone hears the name Theseus the first thing that comes to mind is the story of the Minotaur. Theseus is known now in the modern age as the far-famed slayer of the mythological beast, but really he is so much more than just your everyday do gooder that exterminates wild beasts. He is the protector, defender, and friend to all helpless, defenseless, and poor beings wherever he may go. Now how is the story of Theseus applicable today after nearly 2,500 years?
“ A person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” Is the definition of a hero. In modern society, Odysseus is not a hero. Odysseus should not be considered a hero in modern day because he is not a good leader,Odysseus also does not have a good heart like heros should, and he was disloyal to his wife. One of the reasons Odysseus is not a hero is because he is selfish and does not care about other people's lives.
What is a hero? A hero can have many different explanations. One explanation is, a hero is someone who risks their self to achieve a goal for someone or something else. A hero usually takes a journey, and in this journey the hero is not defined by getting to their destination, the hero is defined by how they get to their destination. In the Odyssey, Homer uses Odysseus’s journey to show how one’s journey can define them as a person.
Heroes are, “People who take risks despite fear”(Source 2). In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus faces many challenges that make him a hero. He battles monsters, goddesses, and enchantresses. Odysseus is a hero in the way that he uses his brain to think about and approach dilemmas. When he and his men are on the Cyclops’ island, Odysseus tells the cyclops that his name was Nobody.
The Odyssey, a Greek epic written by Homer has many characters that could be considered heroes, but none as greatly debated on whether he should be called a hero as Odysseus. Odysseus is a hero due to the fact that he wants to protect the ones he loves, shows courage through his actions and words, and as a leader is able to inspire others to have courage. Mythology is a collection of myths and stories belonging to a particular belief system or cultural tradition. Even though there are a variety of different myths taught around the world, Greek mythologies are more famously known for their fruitful stories and complex relationships. Greek mythologies mostly concern their gods and heroes such as; Hercules, Achilles, Theseus, and Perseus. Of the many Greek heroes, Jason is the most heroic due to the fact that although he is abandoned at a very young age, he is still able to survive, also he proves to Hera the goddess who hated heroes that he is worthy to be favoured by her, and he completes the impossible quest of the Golden Fleece. Jason is born in a very superior family, having a father who is the lawful king of Iolcus.
I think Odysseus fulfills the description of a hero. A hero is defined as a cunning, confidence, brave, determined and a strong leader. A hero risks their own lives for the well being of others. He uses his knowledge, his determination, and also his braveness to save him and his men. When the suitors plan to kill Odysseus son, Telemachas, Odysseus speaks up to his men, “Friends, have we never been in danger before this?
A hero is one who portrays noble characteristics, willing to face obstacles and has the ability to handle both physical and mental strengths. It is difficult to play the role of a hero. Heroes take on a difficult role in the myths “Theseus” and “The Adventures of Odysseus” by Edith Hamilton. Heroes must be determined, as they cannot give up in the middle of the journey. They need to be courageous, as they have to overcome hazardous obstacles through their expedition.
Hercules and Theseus, two great heroes from mythology, seem to be similar in many ways. Both extremely brave and noble; with a love of danger and adventure mixed with compassion, creates the perfect heroes. Their stories intertwine with one another’s when Hercules has to save Theseus from the chair of forgetfulness in Hades. Theseus saved Hercules when he was distraught with intent to kill himself. In a similar way, they both stood by their friends no matter the cost.
A hero is one who takes risks and earns respect from others around him. In Greek mythology, heroes came and gone; they fought with bravery and were respected. In the Trojan War, Menelaus was one of the most significant Greek heroes. Menelaus clearly exemplifies the qualities of the courage and respect in a hero. As the King of Sparta and husband of Helen of Troy, he played an important role in the duel with Paris, the Prince of Troy, to win back his wife from her abduction to Troy.
Heroes have always stood out in time as wondrous beings. In literature they possess certain special traits. These traits are ones such as courage, strength, selflessness and intelligence. Theseus an Athenian hero possess some of these great qualities,“... he was as compassionate as he was brave and a man of great intellect as well as great bodily strength” (133).
