“The Mask of Agamemnon” is a fake of ancient Mycenaean artwork. It is a gold mask that was found with another three flat gold masks by Heinrich Schliemann in the grave circle A of a Mycenae tomb.
First of all, comparing with other three flat Mycenaean masks, there are many obvious stylistic differences between them. “The Mask of Agamemnon” has a longer facial form than the other three. It also has many different facial features. It has a longer and higher nose and also a shorter forehead and chin. Also, on “The Mask of Agamemnon”, the eyebrows are not connected on his nose, while the others are all connected. Most importantly, “The Mask of Agamemnon” is the only one carved with enhanced visible facial hair such as beard (Calder). Its eyes are also carved in different way. His method of archeology is concerned as unscientific and wildish as he used to destroy the tomb without any care and seldom record relics in a systematic way. According to his diary, “The Mask of Agamemnon” is found in the last few days, after few days of heavy rain without digging out anything. And then only one or two days later the whole project stopped (Lapatin). There is a possibility that Schliemann decided to made a “discovery” because he wanted to discover something famous again like he did before. And then after he planted the mask and pretended that he made a new discovery, he made a new important discovery i archeology, which is just what he wanted. So according to the descriptionof Schliemann and also the differences in style, it is reasonable to doubt and make a conclusion that “The Mask of Agamemnon” is a fake
