William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a testimony to the difference between greed and ambition, good and evil, and right and wrong. The story shows that when one becomes obsessed with power, they will often resort to methods of manipulation and retaliation to achieve their desired outcome. In the case of Macbeth, he is approached by the Three Witches who inform him that he will one day become Thane of Cawdor and the King of Scotland. Additionally, they inform Macbeth’s comrade Banquo that his sons will one day be kings.
(1.3.47-48) These hags prophesy that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor, to add to his title Thane of Glamis, and, eventually, king. Confounded, Macbeth demands an explanation, though none is forthcoming. Later, he discovers that he has indeed taken the title Thane of Cawdor, due to the rebellion of the former Thane.
Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis! All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter” (I.3.51-53). The witches' words are a catalyst, fueling Macbeth's ambition and setting him on a treacherous path.
Yet he finds three witches that will change his perception of things for the rest of his days and predict a set of outcomes which ultimately lead and result in the tragedy of Macbeth. These witches were the first depictions of the concept of the stereotypical witch we know today. The story begins with Macbeth, who was widely known, recognized and praised for being Thane of Glamis, returns glorious from a battle against an usurper, the Thane of Cawdor, who led the Norwegian forces against the King of Scotland. On his way back to the King, he encounters a ruined structure, in which strange noises can be heard, then he goes inside and investigates. He finds some witches and they start saying “All hail, Macbeth!
Macbeth is a military leader and is seen as great with his title Thane of Glamis. Once hearing of the great defeat accomplished by Macbeth, Duncan wants to gift him the new title of Thane of Cawdor since the former was a traitor. Macbeth was already Thane of Glamis and he had been given the position of Thane of Cawdor but he didn’t know about it. Also the three sisters told Macbeth that he would be king. After hearing this prediction his mind got totally tempted to kill the king. His interpretation of what the witches said was that he needed to kill the king so he could become king.
In the chaos of a storm, amidst the cracking lightning and deafening thunder, three witches chanted in unison: “All hail, Macbeth! Thane of the Glamis! Thane of the Cawdor! ... future king!” (Shakespeare I.iii.48-50).
What lied ahead for the oppressive Macbeth was none other than a gruesome death for that of a tyrant king that unjustly ruled his kingdom into a pandemonium of madness, suicide, and butchery. The main character, Macbeth, was overcome by his desires which led him to a psychotic state of mind in which he proceeded to execute innocent people for the purpose of disposing of anyone that stood as any level of threat to his position as king. Lady Macbeth, the just as tempting wife of Macbeth, was a no less tempting character in the play as her husband with her plots and intentions that could be argued, led Macbeth to his tyranny. Altogether the play portrays a large number of different themes that rampage the average person’s morals. The overriding
Appearing at the beginning of the play, the witches present themselves as both evil and untrustworthy in nature. When the witches appear before Macbeth and Banquo they greet him with “All hail Macbeth.” They begin manipulating Macbeth by naming him “Thane of Glamis”, “Thane of Cawdor” and “king hereafter.” Macbeth’s ambition is aroused as he cannot help but know more; “Stay, you imperfect speakers. Tell me more.”
Initially, Macbeth was portrayed as a valiant warrior and a loyal servant to his King. Over the course of the play, Macbeth’s growing ambition was highly emphasized but it already exists prior to his hearing of the prophecy of the witches. The witches address Macbeth as the thane of Glamis, thane of Cawdor, and the future King of Scotland. Being a renowned warrior, his ego disregarded his gullibleness. The rubric bestowed to him by the witches lights the flicker inside of Macbeth that would slowly fuel his deep and unreliable aspiration.
