Mathilde compared to her husband is greedy and ungrateful she complains about not have things like she’s poor but she is actually middle class. This story takes place in the 1800’s. At the time the European societies were divided into upper, middle, and lower classes, although sometimes a man can move up by making money. A woman can improve her class by marrying into a higher class, she had to have a dowry but poor families were unable to provide. The theme of the story is to be thankful for what you have and who you are.The Author characterized Mathilde as a being a person who want everything to be about her and a person who is ungrateful for what they have . One type characterization he used to show those characteristics was physical description. In lines 43-44 “she so much longed to be pleased , be envied, be fascinating, and sought after “ I chose these lines because it shows how she wants everything to be about her. Another form of characterization was direct description. In line 6 “she dressed plainly because she couldn't afford fine clothes” I chose this line because if she would have maid and etc... she would be able to afford fine clothing then again she doesn't need fine clothing because she just wants to look like she is rich but she isn't.
