Trickster figures are present throughout mythologies in many cultures. They embody a complex blend of cunning, mischief, and often divine intervention. A popular name that rises in conversation with trickster gods is Maui, a prominent figure in Polynesian mythology. Maui has cunning wit and transformative powers. He creates stories about his actions and how others see him. Maui, in Polynesian mythology, is celebrated as a cultural hero, credited with numerous feats that were said to have shaped the world. One of Maui’s infamous exploits involves his attempt to conquer death by entering a goddess's body and passing all the way through. Rawinia Higgins states, “The demigod Mui-tikitiki-a-Taranga attempted to destroy Hine-nui-te-p. He tried to reverse the cycle of life by entering her vagina and appearing from her mouth, and so overcome death. Changing into the form of a mokomoko (lizard), Mui entered her vagina while she slept, but his struggle provided humor for his friends the trairaka (fantails) who were watching on. Their laughter awoke Hine-nui-te-p. She crushed Mui to death, bringing mortality to humankind”(Higgins). But even in defeat, Maui’s cunningness and determination shines through, showing his resilience and willingness to take risks for the betterment of his people. A notable trickster god that could be compared to maui would be the African folklore trickster god Anansi. Anansi is often depicted as being clever with the ability to outwit his adversaries. Similar to Maui, Anansi frequently employs his cunningness to achieve personal gain or assist his fellow beings.
