487 Words2 Pages

It was all gone that fast. This is a phrase that can be used when you think of Maurice Stokes and his story. Stokes was an amazing basketball player throughout his life and was in the NBA. During one of his game he hit his head on the court. From that point his health was decreasing and he eventually woke up in the hospital paralyzed from the neck down. As i watched the documentary about him was that he was just doing what he loved. I thought about what if this were to happen to me while i was either playing football or lacrosse, and how i would never be able to play that sport again and live a normal life. Unlike maurice my cousin health was perfectly fine but he didn’t have a family at the time. Like i said earlier by adopting this meant she paid for his schooling, cloths, medical care and more. This put me in the position that the family members of Mr. Twymans might have been in. They were probably feeling that how could they support another person and how this would be taking away from what they would be getting in the future. The fact that Jack did this was a surprise to myself and many people at the time. During the time of Maurice accident African American and Caucasian people were not seen as equal and they should not be associated with each other. So this is why Jack role in taking Maurice under his care was weird and unusual at the time. Jack was seen as being an outsider who was breaking the rules and the stereotype of what a white person was back then, however jack didn’t care about this and did what he did because Maurice was he friend, teammate, and it was the right thing to do. This story says that racism was finally being looked past and that some individuals from both sides were finally seeing each other as people without looking at their skin color. Throughout his whole experience Maurice never gave up and all was thought he could get better and one day enjoy the sport he loved. This reminds me of kids from Youth Challenge. The kids at YC are in love with sports and being active and work to one day
