Waikanaloa Wet Cave is located on the north side of Kauai directly off of Highway 560. There has been some debate that the name of this cave was erroneously switched with the wet cave farther off the road called Waikapala’e. There is also a nearby dry cave called Maniniholo. Hawaiians believe that the fire goddess, Pele, gifted these caves to her lover but she later abandoned them when they became filled with water. There is parking conveniently located next to the Waikanaloa Wet Cave’s entrance.

Through partaking in interaction rituals, individuals become members of something greater than themselves. This feeling of being apart of something greater than oneself provides a moral community for the individuals, which then guides individuals in their beliefs and behaviors. It is similar to a never-ending circle; as individuals see the emotionally charged environment that this religion provides, they want to be a part of it, so they partake in unusual rituals, which furthers their engagement and emotional connectedness to their community. It almost reminds me a bit of an addiction. This community turns objects, such as poison and snakes as sacred, which in turn creates a sacred and profane world.

In the beginning, Mary and her friends danced in the woods, but they are caught by Reverend Parris, and afraid they will get in trouble, two of the girls pretend to be afflicted by a witch. The two seemingly afflicted girls send widespread chaos through the town, and the remaining girls have to figure out what to do to get the attention away from their dance in the woods. Mary is understandably terrified as she is a rule follower and has never broken a rule in her life. Mary knows that “the whole country's talkin witchcraft!” (Miller 1107).
Religion was not clearly stressed throughout the story, but it is important to every individual, including Harriet Jacobs. Harriet uses her religion, Christianity to guide her in the correct path and protect her from those who cause violence and danger. Throughout the early modern period, the belief of witchcraft was growing exponentially (Parish, Helen. Class Discussion). During this period women were the predominately accused in witchcraft cases. There were many different reasons why women were blamed for being witches during this time period and these reasons range from not being a good mother, widowed, a bad wife, or even hair color (Parish, Helen. Class Discussion).
