Method To understand the impact of silencing of women, I performed a textual analysis of the interpersonal relationships of Princess Rhaenyra, Lady Alicent, and their interactions with those in the dominant group around them from HBO Max’s House of the Dragon. To understand the impact of silencing and power dynamics on subordinate groups, I performed a textual analysis of the interpersonal relationships within family dyads, specifically between Princess Rhaenyra and King Viserys, her father, and Lady Alicent’s relationship with her father, Lord Hand Otto (see Figure 1 for Targaryen Family Tree). Lady Alicent’s father, Otto Hightower, is the Hand to the King, the King’s official representative and right-hand man. When King Viserys’ wife passed during childbirth, the Hand pushed Lady Alicent to get close to the King in his chambers to offer him comfort. As a result, Lady Alicent and King Viserys developed a friendship and understanding due to the amount of time the Hand pushed Lady Alicent to spend with him. When the time came that the Lords expected King Viserys to find another wife, the King named Lady Alicent. This shocked Princess Rhaenyra and Lady Alicent was her friend as well as the other Lords who were offering their daughters as options. Lady Alicent later realizes that this was due to her fathers force and attempts to use her to further his standing as well. In episode nine: The Green Council, Lady Alicent points out the manipulation that the Hand used on her in the name of their family and that “our hearts were never one. I see that now. Rather, I have been a piece that you moved about the board.” Lady Alicent then became Queen Alicent, gaining legitimate power, and was expected to produce more offspring to strengthen King Viserys line. Queen Alicent and King Viserys first child is a son, Prince Aegon II, producing the first male option for heir to the Iron Throne after King Viserys. Firstly, my research was limited due to the unique relationships between the characters given that there are multiple cases of incest with age gaps, resulting in complex power distances. Secondly, my research was also limited to season one of House of the Dragon and what is shared during the ten episodes. Though I have done some research into what is to come in the next seasons, based on the novel Fire and Blood, I focused my research on what is shared with viewers in season one, the lead up to the Targaryen Civil War. Thirdly, I am the sole author of this research and this analysis has not been overlooked and edited by a fellow academic in this discipline. Thus, this paper is lacking a peer review to support that my findings are accurate and reliable. Fourthly, this research is based on a fantasy drama television series that has been adapted from a fantasy fiction novel. Therefore, the interpersonal communication shown is not between real people and has limitations on its authenticity. Additionally, the television series has edited the content of the origin novel to remain of interest to viewers, leaving out some original interactions noted in the
