Well known poet and teacher, Maya Angelou, in her interview with the Oprah Masterclass series, describes her life and much of what she has learned along the way to help overcome her biggest challenges. Maya’s purpose is to help anyone and everyone get the most out of life and use simple logic to defeat the biggest problems we’re confronted with in our everyday lives. She harnesses a love conquers all attitude and a positive tone so that viewers may be empowered to look inside themselves for strength and understanding, as though she is presenting us with the key to unlock true joy and fulfillment. Maya begins the video interview reflecting about how well each decade of life has been for her. First, she mentions initially how good her sixties were. She then moves on to say that she thought the 70’s surprised her, and she loved them. Thinking the 80’s may slow down, again she is happy to report there is no shortage of writing new books, poetry, and still showing much excitement about learning new things. She says “I am human. Nothing human can be alien to me.” Dr. Angelou explains knowing this fostered the belief that she and anyone is capable of anything they can think of. Maya then shifts to learning and teaching after speaking of her first book, Why the Caged Bird Sings. To her, life was a class. Her grandmother tells her “When you get, give. When you learn, teach.” She sees these as lessons to live by in her own belief. It is clear Maya is a lifelong learner. And, always being open to learning gives her no fear to ask questions and have thought provoking conversation. This gives her a lot to think of and deep insight into many lives of her students and people she encounters. She continues to share all she can with everyone.
