The Mayan adopted a form of government. Kings would rule over them.However while kings were away,women would rule. One kings name was Pakel the Great. He was born in 603 A.D. Pakel died in 683 A.D. at the age of 80.

The Mayan worshiped many gods. They worshiped gods of nature. The god’s names were Chac, Bolon Tzacab, Kukulcan( who was also known as Quetzalcoatl some cultures) and Itzamna. Mayans had one goddess. She was the goddess of suicide.

The Mayan were remembered for their many achievements. They excelled in astronomy, agriculture, engineering, and communications. They invented the 365 day calendar we use today. They lived in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras. The first city was El Mirador. Over 100,000 people lived there. Another city was Kaminaljuyu. Mayans lived here for over 2,000 years. One city was named Caracol. Caracol was located in the valley of Mexico. They also built a city called Tikal. Tikal’s tallest building stood at 230 feet tall. Teotihuacan was the last major city the Mayans built. It was located in Cayo district.

Daily life as a Mayan was very different than our daily life. The wealthy would wear animal skins.Commoners wore very simple clothing. Women would stay home and cook or make clothing. Men would work on the farm all day.They ate corn, beans, and squash.Kings would live in palaces made of stone.Usually commoners would live in huts made of mud. One of the Mayans favorite games was Mayan basketball. When the game was over the losing team would be sacrificed to their gods. They also loved to sing and dance.
