The magnificent Maya are known for some of the most important human achievements in the history of the world. The Maya were a large group of people that lived in the rainforests of Mesoamerica beginning around 3,000 years ago. In this essay I'll be discussing all of the achievements and what made them remarkable, these will be judged as scale, genius, effort, and significance. The Maya had several remarkable achievements which included their trade network, a number system, calendars, and building cities. The numerical system that the Maya created was very important because of how and why it was used. The Maya's number system was based on dots, dashes, and shells. The Maya used this to their advantage because it made them make really accurate astronomical predictions. This also impacted how they made their calendar and how the numerical system connects to the calendars. The criteria for this achievement is also scale, effort, genius, and significance. These cities were built and fit all of the criteria and that's why it is the most remarkable of all the achievements. Evidence of this achievement is the way it was a benefit for the Maya and it shows how the Maya worked together for everyone. This document (Document B) shows that the "Mayan civilization ranks as one of the great pre-industrial cultures of the world." It has been estimated that 80 to 130 workers were probably hired to complete this city (El Mirador Copán) in two to three months. The city that is called "Tikal" covered six square kilometers which caused the number of workers that were involved to go up. This evidence supports why building cities was the Mayans most remarkable achievement because it shows how the Maya put a lot of effort into building the cities. The criteria for all of the Documents is the same, but in this case all four of the criteria fit in with this document, scale, genius, effort and significance. Building cities is scale because it had a big impact on the Mayan society at the time, building cities was genius because it shows how much thought was put into how many people would be needed to build the cities and how long it would take. Building cities took a lot of effort into the work that the workers put into actually building the cities, and building these cities, and lastly the criteria of significance applies to this
