Maybe One Day is a book about the friendship between Olivia and Zoe, written by Melissa Kantor. On page 42 Olivia tells Zoe, “I have leukemia, Zoe.” This is the most important quote in the book because both of their lives are completely turned upside down. Olivia is scared because she has no idea what’s going to happen to her, high school is supposed to be the best four years of her life. Zoe is worried because Olivia is the popular, social one. She’s supposed to guide Zoe through high school. Zoe needs help with school, dance, and boys-especially boys. Before she was cut from NYBC, she devoted her whole life to dance. She never had time for anything else, except for hanging with Olivia. She had “school friends” but no one she was close with. That’s why Olivia’s diagnosis completely changed her. She had no idea what to do. Livvie always made the decisions, got them invited to parties, and made them look cool. She was popular, but only because of Olivia. Zoe is more quiet and sarcastic. She described herself as normal sized, not chubby but not skinny. Her hair is short and dark brown. Even though Olivia has cancer, the whole book revolves around Zoe. How she handles things, what she thinks, etc. Zoe comes off as selfish, judgemental, and clueless. On the way to the hospital she wished it was Jake who was sick, not Olivia. Mainly because she doesn't want to go through high school without her best friend.
