“Rape was carnal knowledge of a female by force and without consent.”(Lee 180) This is the definition of rape that Attcuis gives scout in chapter 14. I believe this is what Tom Robinson did to Mayella Ewell. Looking back on the trial in chapters 17-20, you will notice that out of all the witnesses Tom Robinson was the only one with a different story compared to everyone else. Everyone that was there like Bob and Mayella Ewell has a different story. Mayella Ewell was attracted and harmed, even the sheriff himself saw the bruises on her face and neck, how much could one lie about being beaten? Believe what you want that those injuries were real. This is how the story went for both Mayella and Bob Ewell this is a summed-up version of that night on November twenty-first. Mayella asks Tom to fix her door while Mr. Ewell was getting firewood. From Mayella's perspective, this is when Tom attacked her and started to rape her. [pg.] This was also the time when Bob heard her and looked through the window and saw it himself, what Tom was doing to his daughter but Tom was too fast and Mr. Ewlle could not catch him. One might bring up why did Bob not call a doctor, we know for a fact that the Ewells are low on money. Knowing this one could make the argument that they didn't even try because why would they know that, I did not know this until reading the book. Two they are used to getting shut down or not respected because of their money problems in this society, why would they take another chance at getting laughed at or getting humiliated? They wouldn't and after a while of getting shut down this is just going to be common nature to not believe you can have something, and that is why they didn’t call a doctor. Moving on to what Tom said happened, Mayella asked him to help with the door and he checked on it to see nothing wrong then again Mayella asked him to grab a box off of a shelf and that is when Mayella jumped on him.
