NCIS has been a beloved action-drama since it’s start in 2003. Basically, NCIS is about a team of naval criminal investigators whose passion and determination help them catch any bad guy, but unfortunate mistakes sometimes take the ones they love away from them. Since the beginning, NCIS has long followed the norms of basic cop shows. However, there has been a change in the world, and that riptide has begun to make its way onto this show. NCIS has shown gradual evolution from following the basic gender stereotypes presented throughout media, to showing the new age of independent female detectives, but also providing some classic cases of gender norms throughout the show. To start, Ziva is the traditional cute detective that has rookie mistakes. In the beginning, she is task with doing assignments for probationary agents, which usually involves the “dirty work.” She is usually given classic female jobs like questioning the wives or girlfriends who lost their loved ones. In the article Me and the Boys: How Ziva Becomes an Integral Part of a Male Dominated Team, Michelle Cleveland brings up how Ziva must never let her guard down and how she has to continuously perform perfectly because she is trying to become the only woman on this male dominated team. (Cleveland, 2012) I disagree with Cleveland’s view that Ziva is mistreated because, as one of her first episodes show, she earned the trust and respect of Gibbs by saving his life.
