The Me Too movement is a movement that is actively working to fix a social problem. In October 2017, people used the #MeToo as an international movement to fight against sexual harassment and assault. The hashtag has been used in social media by many people in order to demonstrate the widespread of sexual harassment and assault in the workplace. The Me too movement relates to the symbolic interactionist theory because “a basic premise of symbolic interactionist theories of social problems is that the condition must be defined or recognized as a social problem for it to be a social problem” (Mooney, Knox and Schacht, 2017, p. 14). …show more content…

In 2006 a social activist and community organizer named Tarana Burke started to use the phrase “Me Too” to create awareness about the sexual abuse women of color were suffering within underprivileged communities. As of today date, the Me Too movement has been recognized as a social problem as stated in the symbolic interactionist theory since the #MeToo was brought back on October 2017 to create an awareness about sexual abuse and harassment. Alyssa Milano was the person who brought the idea of the hashtag because she wanted to reveal how many people around the world have experimented sexual harassment and assault. The Me Too movement is part of the Blumer’s Stages of a Social Problem because as suggested by Herbert Blumer “the social problems develop in stages” (Mooney, Knox and Schacht, 2017, p. 14). The awareness towards sexual harassment and assault began to developed over time until it became a social
