There needs to be little to no media coverage over serial killings when they occur. Serial killers thrive off the attention they receive from the media. Potential serial killers also see the publicity serial killers are currently getting, and it induces their want to commit crimes of their own. Every time there is a new serial killer on the loose, it is on every media platform around the United States, or even around the world. Every time there is a new story released about the killer, it catches the attention of an inspiring serial killer. They see the attention, and notoriety that they could go, and it provokes them to carry out their own crimes. In every report about the case, there are people reading them that are being motivated to commit a series of their own murders. They want to be able to achieve the same level of fame and attention as the person in the papers. The media is fuel to the fire of serial killers. The media gives them exactly what they want- attention. Something they probably did not get as a child or even into their adult life.When the media is broadcasting the names, the life histories, their families, schooling, their behaviors in life, and the final acts of a serial killer, it is fuel to the perception and allure of wanting to carry out a similar act to achieve the same level of attention. (Fiona Guy, 4). As the media adds fuel to the perception of serial killing, it begins to spark other serial killers. The more the media broadcasts what is going on, the specifics of the crimes, and the person, and it could catch the attention of the wrong person. The media portrays serial killers as a person you could identify with, that they are just like a regular person that has regular emotions, and a regular life like the rest of us.
