Many people diagnosed with mental illness are disgusted by the way the media portrays mental illness because it is romanticized and over exaggerated. Mental illness is most commonly portrayed in the horror genre of movies, as the killer always is “insane” or “psycho.” Mentally ill people do commit crimes, but the way they are portrayed is over-sensationalized to make it dramatic. The “insane” people always try to kill innocent people with no motive other than a lust for blood. But even though tragedies like this do happen, they are not as sensationalized as media makes it out to be. A recent example is the popular Netflix series Thirteen Reasons Why, where the lead female character, Hannah Baker, kills herself due to bullying, depression, and sexual assault. An example of her flawed thinking is, “I'm about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically, why my life ended. And if you're listening to this tape you're one of the reasons why.” (Hannah Baker). It promotes the idea that getting revenge on those who have wronged someone by killing oneself is okay. But it is not at all. As someone who has tried to do something like this once in my life, it is a disgusting thing to do. It places the blame of one’s actions onto another’s shoulders. This show has even created copycat suicides like a twenty-three year old male committed suicide and left recorded tapes to those who had wronged him. The warnings on the show itself are vague and do not encapsulate the severity of the material being shown. The show even displays an elongated, romanticized depiction on Hannah’s suicide, which is one of the most important things to not show in
