Young teenage girls and women now days go through more depression then they did prior to social media. Many young teenage girls and women don’t like to hear negative input from others. Beauty is a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight. Images of female bodies are shown everywhere on media in todays society. We’re seeing girls at younger ages starting to be dissatisfied with their bodies. Teenage girls and women obtain this eating disorder by making themselves starve because they’re not satisfied with their bodies. For example, if a woman is told by her husband that she needs to lose a little weight, she might feel like she has to starve herself to look better for her husband. This shows how women, worry too much about what others think of their self-image. These eating disorders not only affect women and teenage girls emotionally but also can cause a lot of health issues. Some of these health problems include anorexia, bulimia, and physical changes. Anorexia is a life threatening disorder caused by teenage girls and women who starve themselves to be skinny so they can look like model thin girls. Bulimia is another life threating disorder in which teenage girls and women go through a cycle of bingeing and then induce vomiting. Eating disorders also cause long lasting and dangerous side effects such as hair loss, low blood pressure, fainting, anemia, and tooth decay. For example, teenage girls and women might starve themselves or vomit to try to stay skinny but don’t realize they’re losing nutrients and vitamins from their body, which makes them very sick and weak. Unfortunately, eating disorders are more of a mental issue, which later becomes a physical issue. “This occurs because the intense emotional component attached to a belief automatically causes your brain to resist any attempt to question it with reason”(Ammon-Wexler).
