“When I was your age, I was out in the backyard playing ball with the kids that lived in the neighborhood, making mud pies and staying out until the streetlights came on.”, the grownup would say. Conversations of such go on each and everyday and tends to make some wonder. Have childhoods been ruined? Children are no longer at the park playing tag or climbing the monkey bars.They are instead scrolling through their feed on Instagram, snapchatting their friends and condensing their thoughts into 140 characters. Childhoods are being ruined by media, video games, and internet.

Porn, which used to be hidden and private, can now be accessed with the touch of a few buttons. This introduces children into very bizarre content that they shouldn’t have access to until they are grown. Julie, a 14 year old girl, was blackmailed into sending explicit images and videos to someone online who she thought she knew. She now wears deep, dark red stripes on both of her wrists from attempting to commit suicide because she was being cyberbullied. The internet opens the door for pedofiles and rapists into the homes of children. Once upon a time, people had to actually go out into the world to scream “stranger danger”. However, in today’s society there is a 14 year old Jake who in actuality is 43 year old Ronnie that is getting personal information out of children and preying on them. This can lead to rape, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy and even suicide. The last way the internet is ruining childhoods is causing cyber bullying.There are so many kids posting selfies online and flipagrams. While there are so many other kids commenting mean and hateful comments under the pictures of these children. Cyberbullying can cause emotional and physical stress.
