Medical Spanish Podcast Analysis

The Medical Spanish Podcast on the podbay.fm website are interactive podcasts; the purpose of the podcast is to help listeners in mastering Spanish for the health care setting. The way that the podcast is given makes it a helpful tool in learning Spanish medical terminology. Doctor Molly Martin begins each podcast by introducing the courses topic, which then leads into a listening session that displays a possible conversation between a medical professional and a patient. The podcast finishes up with reviewing the new Spanish vocabulary. My experience with the four podcast interpretation assignments have definitely helped me retain new words and phrases for future references. In the health care setting, it is extremely common for health professionals to check a person’s blood sugar levels. Thanks to these podcasts, I now know that niveles de azúcar en la sangre translates into blood sugar levels. Another pair of vocabulary words that caught my attention were words that address medical aparatos or medical devices. Things like the la aguja (needle), la jeringa (syringe), la cuchilla (blade), la corbertura protectora (protective cover), émbolo (plunger), el frasco (bottle), el tapón (cap) or una telilla de algodón (a cotton pad) are items that are commonly used in a clinical setting. As a future health care professional, I am glad that this podcast has taught me these common words for these clinical utensils. Health professionals should also be familiar with common directional Spanish words such as colocar (to place), ajustar (to adjust), añadir (to add), golpear suavemente (to tap), cargar (to load), and aplicar (to apply); therefore, if health professionals are given a relevant health care order they should be able to follow if they learn these Spanish Terms. I found the translations to these terms on the websites of Word Reference, Spanish Dict, and
