Maria Mitchell was born in Nantucket, Massachusetts on August 1, 1818, and was one of nine brothers and sisters. Her family were Quakers and believed in equal education for men and women. Maria attended local schools and was tutored by her father. He taught her how to use a telescope when she was twelve, and she helped him calculate exactly when the annual solar eclipse would be. In the United States of America, every four years, a new presidential candidate is chosen, through such, arguably life-changing event, the epitome of what a democracy looks like is showcased and performed for the world. As historic and important the 2016 election was in America, considering a woman and celebrity ran against each other, it is evident that what is to come, within the 2020 election, will only further highlight polarizing opinions/parties of American citizens; as it did with the 2016 presidential election. In Euripides’ text The Medea, Medea can easily be painted as the villian. She is a woman who killed her own children in an attempt to spite her husband. But, by examining the text, we can see that she deserves some sympathy. She has little to no control over her own life and has to rely on the will of men. And as a foreigner in Corinth abandoned by her husband, she faces even more challenges than the native women of Corinth did.
One time, Poseidon chained Zeus up with the aid of Hera, Zeus’s wife, because he was thought of as an unruly god. Another myth is that Poseidon mated with Medusa to create Pegasus, the winged horse. A naval power that offended Poseidon was Crete. When its ruler, King Minos, asked the sea god for a sign, a white bull emerged from the waves. A religious custom required King Minos to sacrifice the bull, but he did not.

Medea was treated unfairly in the patriarchal society that she lived in and due to the circumstances she was forced to abide by, she sought to achieve her own form of justice. Women were mistreated and regarded as inferior to men. In fact, Medea mentioned how women were like foreigners forced to abide by their husband’s laws and remain subservient. Essentially, women were treated as outsiders and were thought to need constant protection from male figures. So, when the King of Corinth kicked her and her children out of Corinth and Jason left them, she wanted revenge since she felt she had been wronged.
