From a young age I watched the cheerleaders at football games in incredible admiration. All of the girls- in their sleek uniforms with pompoms in colors representing their school- captured my attention. I longed to be in their shoes one day, and I looked up to them. The cheerleaders claimed the spot role model to me for the majority of my childhood. I never realized that years into the future I would fill their shoes, and carry the responsibility of being the person little girls looked up to.
R is for Reserve Grand Champion Every year my family and I go to the Heart of Illinois (HOI) Fair. We normally enter in the Hobbies Department. What that is, is anyone can put a display together of an item on a board with a maximum amount of 10 items.
Title IX has several requirements to be considered a sport and all-star cheerleading meets every requirement given. The most important criteria for being recognized as a sport by Title IX is competitions during a defined season. All-star cheerleaders do have a defined competition season. Competitions run August through May with 51 sanctioned events to win bids (varsity.com). Regional competitions run December to March with the opportunity for teams to get bids to qualify for bigger competitions.
Our community has always played a major part in the athletic depart of our school. Every year they hold a pie auction, where pies can go for up to $700. A community tradition that is not associated with the school is the County Fair. It is always more of a social gathering than anything else. People will always asking “if you have been to get a greasy fair burger”.
The Blaze Pizza fundraiser took place on March 15 from 8-10 p.m. with many UCF students coming out to eat and support Asian American Heritage Week. According to Miraflor, the money raised from the fundraiser and upcoming events will go directly to funding those events and a future heritage month in 2017. Throughout these past four years Columbia athletics hasn't just taught me my physical strength, but also the values of commitment, hard work, dedication, leadership, and trust. Cheerleading includes all those easy and pretty factors, but it is also a sport that you stunt, tumble, and jump. Jumps and tumbling may seem really easy to many people, but there’s more work done than most might think is possible. Stunting is also a major element in cheer, and that’s what really pleases the crowd, but stunting takes tons of work.
