In The Giver, Jonas and the Giver are the only ones holding all the memories. Jonas and the Giver hold great responsibility in their community. The community seems to be fine with not having all the memories so they can have a “perfect” life. Although, it wouldn’t be a perfect life for one or two people, Jonas and the giver, because they have to hold all the memories. But, everybody should hold their own memories, because it would be less of a burden for Jonas, without your own memories you won’t have true feelings, and Experiencing different, your own, memories makes you unique. Being responsible for all memories is a big burden. A quote from the Giver could show this: “His childhood, his friendships, his carefree sense of security-all of these things seemed to be slipping away. With his new, heightened feelings, he was overwhelmed by sadness at the way the others had laughed and shouted, playing at war, but he knew that they couldn’t understand why, without the memories.”(Lowry, pg 135) Everybody’s memories and pain is a hard thing to hold and a big responsibility.
