When thinking of a mental health policy the usual thought is of a policy that directly affects the population referred too, however, policies that affect the providers affect the population. The policy in question is; License Pathways for Mental Health Workforce (Unknown, Colorado House Bill 1103 (Prior Session Legislation), 2016). This policy addresses the need for, and implements a system in which individuals seeking mental health care are able to obtain care from a qualified professional, ensuring indubitable references. Whereas prior to the implementation of this registry individuals seeking care, unless referred, were more or less on their own when choosing a qualified mental health care professional.

This has improved with the removal of the requirement to register, but is still valid, registry is now voluntary but at what cost? What does it cost the professional who chooses not to register so as to maintain a low profile in an attempt to protect potential clients? To look at a registry from the side of the persecuted, any time there is a list of anything there is a potential for abuse and subjection, either on behalf of the client or the professional. Who is to say that by registering it would not open a professional up to additional scrutiny and or persecution because of the type of client that a professional may specialize in? To look at it from the point of the client, why would a client want to choose a provider on the registry as the validity of the therapist’s confidentiality may come into question? With a registry the potential to be marginalized or subjected against is high. As a potential client or even a client of a psychotherapist the only thing that is imperative is trust. Trust in your therapist, in the process, and that your confidences are being kept, but when your therapist is on a registry the question is asked, “What has to be reported to the governing authority?” Thus eliminating all trust and destroying anything before a potential client even walks through the
