For novice teachers, studies show that about 17 to 40 percent of them will quit within the first five years. Many reasons exist as to why, with popular trends including: low pay (where beginning teachers earn 20% less than their college degree earner counterparts), dissatisfaction with compensation, better career opportunities, challenging working conditions, personal reasons, lack of support for new teachers, and inadequate preparation. Most notably, the factors that go hand-in-hand are teacher preparation and support through mentorship. If teaching institutions are not thorough with their preparation, veteran teachers at the novice teachers’ school would be the next available option. A mentor’s expertise within the school, given their tenure, should nurture a new teacher into becoming effective and efficient.

As a future teacher, I will always have good intentions for my students. I will recognize their abilities and encourage growth while having a positive approach. I will teach in a variety of ways that is beneficial to my students. If they are having difficulties learning the material, I will change my teaching strategies until progress is achieved. I will include every student; the quiet will be heard, the misunderstood will be redirected and the gifted will be rewarded.
I became a school counselor simply because I wanted to live a life of meaning and be a force for good in the world. Throughout life, having real and honest conversations that support growth, positive change, and owning responsibility are critical to self-actualization. I want to empower my students to give their best effort in all areas of life, not just their education. I believe that simple encouragement in this type of environment is the key to positive change, and I wanted to dedicate my professional life to reflect that belief. I whole-heartly believe in the holistic approached to a balanced and fulfilling life and being a school counselor is a unique career that fulfills this value.
On Monday, both Mr. Levine and our paralegal were gone, so it was just my on-site mentor, her husband (who was recruited to help out), and me in the office. For a large portion of the day, I was on the computer and answering phone calls. The phones weren 't too crazy, thankfully. My main purpose for being there was to help my on-site mentor as much as possible. I don 't know how to do even half of what the paralegal does, but I knew enough to help with standard office stuff, like scanning papers and drafting subpoenas to be sent out (mostly for personal injury cases, but for family law cases as well).
Professionalism whether in the workplace or an academic setting can easily be deemed comparable. Both settings necessitate the adherence to a set of values. These values may be established through a formally agreed upon code of conduct as exemplified in a work or student handbook or through the informal expectations of colleagues, clients, professors, or peers. Personal Statement I come from a large family with relatives from a little ranch in Chihuahua, Mexico. Many of which have never made it past grade school. Mainly due to their mother, my grandma, she had fallen very ill. Due to her condition and lack of money my aunts and uncles dropped out of school to work and help pay for her medication and medical expenses. The older siblings had to take care of the younger siblings.
Why do you believe you are a good fit for the Peer Mentor position? I enjoy helping people be more like themselves. I feel indebted to the University of Saint Francis for helping me grow and live the life that lives inside of me, and I would like to give back that feeling of self-awareness to others. I have positive energy, good communication skills, and a growth mindset. I work well one-on-one and in a team setting.
Reflecting on my educational and practical experiences, I appreciate the infinite influence that teachers have on children. I realise that children will take the skills and knowledge learnt in the classroom and use it throughout their lives. I know a teacher has to deal with many daily pressures and challenges, in the classroom. However, I feel I require the skills needed to deal with these challenges. As a teacher I hope not only to be an educator but a positive role model, whom the children can look up to and trust.
It’s a teacher that doesn’t just instruct, but take the time to truly mentor the students. They display the characteristics of a leader, and inspire the students, not just present material. Mentoring teaching is taking the time to develop relationships with your students. The positive attitude that a Mentoring Teacher demonstrates towards a student can instill a lifetime love of the subject they may be struggling with at that moment. By just taking the time to encourage them or show them the enthusiasm you have in teaching them, you become a mentor in their lives at that moment that can continue on for their entire life.
