Abstract: This term paper studies about the personality development of the Disney fictional character “Merida” from the movie “Brave” in the light of the two theorist i-e, Alfred Adler and Karen Horney. This paper will try to enlighten which theory is more influential in describing the characters personality. As the movie proceeds, she noticed that she was unable to resolve the matter on her own. This was the moment where she thought she couldn’t fix the problem and then she came closer to the idea of self realization, but still she made the endeavor, spending time with her mother when she became the bear, she tried to explain her what she want and that she doesn’t want to turn her into a bear, she only wanted to change her mind and let her enjoy the liberty and it finally helped her to change the things. She didn’t change her fate only, but her efforts did work for the other youngsters of her kingdom as well and enlighten her people to raise their voice, have freedom of choice and introduced the concept of freewill. The reason why I choose Adler and Horney to analyze Merida’s personality is that they both talked about striving and motivation forces present in an individual. From Adler’s feelings of inferiority to Horney’s self- realization, both the theorists helped me analyze Merida. Adler’s fictional finalism does a great job because it was directly related to Merida’s life goals of not being the typical princess, while Horney somehow fizzles in her neurotic
