At the beginning of the book Meursault showed lack of feeling at Maman’s funeral, drinks coffee and smokes next to his mother’s coffin, which shows disrespect to his mother. Psychological reasons for him showing no remorse is the he is a sociopath. Behaviors of sociopath include antisocial attitudes and behaviors and a lack of a conscience. Sociopaths have very little true feelings towards others and can treat them as an object. The effects of their behavior come across as evil even though that is not their intention. I believe that if a person’s choices continue to be evil the person will become completely evil. Meursault’s evil choices continued and therefor made him evil. As described in the story Meursault shows a darker side of himself when the caretaker offers him some coffee with milk and a cigarette “I like milk in my coffee… and we smoked.”(pg.8 “The Stranger”). It is brought up again at his trial that he does not cry at his mother’s funeral, but falls asleep on pg. 11 “I remember opening my eyes… I woke up because my back was hurting more and more.” Later in the book during his trial the prosecutor explained that someone would not eat, drink, or smoke next to their deceased mother because it shows disrespect. …show more content…

At first it seems like an accident, but then he fires four more times, “The trigger gave… Then I fired four more times…” (pg. 59). Possible reason for him shooting continuously is his orbitofrontal cortex. The orbitofrontal cortex deals with emotion and decision making. The way his orbitofrontal cortex could possibly work is he knows what he has done, but either way the victim is still dead, so, might as well take out my anger. If that is the case, he has a over-controlled hostility. People who are over-controlled hostility type rarely display anger, are emotionally rigid, and their anger can build up.
