From my point of view the definition of culture given by Clifford Geertz refers to the main objective of empires throughout the whole history. As we have seen in class, empires in the east tended to be lighter in their ruling by giving the territories they colonized an opportunity to preserve their most important values built over the years of life of that civilization. Nevertheless, those confederations involuntarily acquire certain customs by the share of the culture with the colonizer empire. On the other hand, the way the empires of the west conquered and imposed their culture selling it as if it was a modern way of life (roman empire example) which as a result meant a better quality of living made this process a forced one that didn’t …show more content…

Firstly, as I have seen in my past Art History courses, this type of expression was used initially as a way of storytelling (prehistoric art in caves). During the Greek and Roman empire, art started to be manipulated and used in order to transmit the religious polytheistic culture of this civilizations and then as a way of propaganda to maintain their allies near and their enemies afraid. Sculptures of Caesar Augustus were used to transmit the image of the emperor to all the reign. In the definition of culture we can also see that generally the way of communicating between inhabitants of the same empire tend to be similar (in western empires), as that gives the citizens a sensation of equality. As time has passed, ways of building empires have become more and more subtle; now, modern empires sell to you in an everyday basis the excellent choice you made by joining that organization. Religious empires keep existing but are less influent than they were in the past. We can now see how the extremist Islamic empire is arising by causing terror in the European countries. That is one way to recruit new members for their organization that has an expansionist objective and claims many territories that nowadays are completely civilized and don’t need any external invasion to become better. That is to say also that in crisis periods, politic decisions tend to be more extremist, while other types of ways of thinking become more and more popular and especially not the right
