In the story My Mother, the idea of money is looked at to be what makes a person happy in life. The mother in the story did not want her son to become an artist because she did not think that artist make very good money. As the poem went on you saw her make fun of his job and not being supportive of his job. This idea of money first arrives at the beginning of the poem when the mother stated, “Dad and everyone thinks you turned out very well as long as you can pay your bills nobody can say a word” (Mezey 202). I feel like his mother is trying to tell him to find a good paying job so that he can make enough money to pay his bills. By saying this, I believe that she almost lacks confidence in him to make enough money by being an artist. If that is the career that your own son has chosen for himself, why would you not be supportive? Still today when I think of an artist I do not associate them with making a lot of money, someone who struggles to get their artwork or writings out in public, because that is what society around us has taught us. When you want your child to do well in life, I feel like you are supposed to support them and tell them that they can be anything they want to be. My mother was not supportive of my career path at first either. She tried to convince me that I was making a huge mistake and that I was not going to make it. Once she realized how much I really wanted to become a medical professional, she backed off and told me that she believed and supported me in life. I feel as if I have this expectation that mothers are to support their children and not push them away from their dreams and happiness. This mother does not seem to be on that same
