Michael Vey: Rise of the Elgen is a novel written by Richard Paul Evans. It is also the second book of the Michael Vey series. This book is about a group of children some of whom are very special. The group of children call themselves the “Electroclan” because of their unique abilities created by electricity. The goal of the Electroclan is to stop the Elgen from taking over the world with electric children. The time of this book is present day society as we know it, but the major setting is the Peruvian Starxource Plant in Peru, South America. The Starxource Plant provides power to all of Peru. They force the people into believing that they will die, then give them hope of their life, make them feel horrible, and end with them begging to be a part of the Elgen. The Assembly Hall is where the Elgen guards eat and sleep. Michael Vey would be considered the protagonist of this specific book as well as the series and the rest of the Electroclan help him out. The members of the Electroclan are Michael Vey, Taylor Ridley, Ostin Liss, Ian, Abigail, McKenna, Zeus, Jack, Wade, Grace, and Tanner. Ostin, Jack, and Wade are all normal humans, but Michael, Taylor, Ian, Abigail, McKenna, Zeus, Grace, and Tanner are Glows. Glows are humans with advanced electricity running through them that create special powers. Michael has pulsing, or an electrical shock as well as the ability to form lightning balls. Taylor can read minds as well as create short term memory loss. Ian uses electrolocation for sight instead of light giving him the ability to see through anything with electricity, like a shark. A basic plotline of the story starts in Pasadena for a brief time. The Electroclan had just taken down the Elgen in their Pasadena Academy. The Elgen, however, had taken Michael’s mother and the Electroclan needed to find out where they had taken her. They go back to Michael’s home in Idaho where they find out that the Elgen had taken over Michael’s apartment, Ostin’s parents are missing, Jack’s house was burned down, and Taylor’s family is in danger of the Elgen. The only other person with family in the area is Wade who grew up in such a bad situation that they cannot go there. They only good that happens is they find out that Michael’s mom is in the Elgen’s Peruvian Starxource Plant. This leads them to a search for a safe house. In this search an odd woman hands them a phone that can only be powered by Michael. Michael uses this phone to meet the man the call The Voice who gives them passage to Peru to stop the Elgen. On this journey the entire group is captured and almost fed to electric rats and escape the plant. Michael, however, has to sacrifice his safety for the group and stays behind in the facility to let his friends escape the plant. Michael is recaptured and again almost fed to the rats. He once again escapes, this time alone, into the Peruvian jungle where he is again almost captured by the Elgen before
