Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was one of the greatest sculptors and painters of the Italian Renaissance period, which shaped him into being a brilliant architect. Michelangelo was a master of many disciplines, giving him a new and unique influence to the development of Western art. He often said that he was neither an architect nor a painter, he was both. He brought a quality in his architecture that distinguished the beginning of a transition, away from the ideals of classical art and into a more modern type of art. Architecture developed into Michelangelo's primary career in the last thirty years or so of his life. Once he settled down in Rome, he began to work on projects vigorously.
