The period from the fall of the Roman Empire, which is called the Middle or Medieval ages, was a difficult time in the history of the Church and Europe. There were many controversies and abuses in the Church, coupled with external threats and invasions from different nations. That is why when people think of this period, they refer to it as the Dark Ages. But then, it is also during this time that the Church had some of its major achievements. The Church definitely transformed during this period and as it did, it also simultaneously transformed the nation of Europe. As Woods (2005, p.66) said, “it was a gift from the Middle Ages... it was a gift of the civilization whose center was the Catholic Church.” Evidently, Woods is correct as there were many important events during this age that contributed to the progress of Europe in different aspects with the guidance of the Church. They were able to come up of new military techniques and defense systems based on the Crusades, which they could use in other coming wars. New military orders were also prepared and formed to defend the lands for any future threats. These were the Knights Templar, the Knights Hospitalers, and the Teutonic Knights. The Knights Templar were in charge of the maintenance of routes, defense of the kingdom of Jerusalem, and keeping the financial support sent by Western kingdoms. The Knights Hospitalers were in charge of the medicine and caring of the injured soldiers. The Teutonic Knights also did the same as the Knights Hospitalers, except they would also help fight in battles. These knights became one of the major defense systems of the Middle ages, especially during Islam attacks.
