Life in the middle ages was not easy. There were high mortality rates, people dying left and right, and there was never a surplus of food. People lived day to day at the mercy of circumstance, and this gave institutions, like the church, the ability to take ahold of the people. The people now devoted every action and act of good will to God. Monopolizing this, the church tried to constantly grab them and manipulate their actions. The caesaropapism displayed by the Russian orthodoxy shows that they were trying to be their country’s predominate force of law. It is possible to see the church push self-glorifying propaganda in the Tale of the White Cowl, while it is also possible to see the harsh living conditions of the Russian people within the …show more content…

The church officials had more control than the actual rulers of the area and this can be seen a couple of instances throughout the two narratives. With the story of Saint Sergius there is evidence that the rulers of Russia trusted the church officials. When the prince of Russia, Dimitry, wished to go and battle the heathens, but first he needed to seek counselling from the church. He is blessed by Sergius and hurries off to battle.[3] It is evident here that the people in power are manipulated by the church and had Sergius not thought that defeating the heathens was to go against God he would had told them not to go, resulting in the prince not fighting in a war. This same type of control is described in the Tale of the White Cowl. The tale describes that the “Russian tsar will be elevated by God above other nations.”[4](271) This quote shows that the secular powers will be influenced by “God.” The church officials are stating that will be puppet masters and control what they claim to be the “Third Rome.”[5](265) The church says that “[his] majesty will be strengthened by its orthodoxy, and it will become more honorable than the two Romes combined.”[6](271) This further proves the point that the orthodox churches never sought to let the regents rule over their country, but to have the papacy pulling the strings and truly governing the people.
