Middlebury is located in southwest area of Vermont. This town was, “chartered in 1761 and was settled just after the Revolutionary War” (Middlebury). The current population here is 8,200 people. This makes it, “the largest community in the (Addison) county” (Middlebury). Addison County is around 800 square miles, Middlebury being about 40 square miles.

Middlebury College is a relatively smaller school found in this town, with about 2,500 students. The college was founded in 1800 by Gamaliel Painter, who you can actually see his cane on display at the school. Middlebury was, “meant to be an orthodox Congregationalist school” (Albers, 181). Middlebury College (and University of Vermont), “Continued to draw students, despite dire predictions that Vermont would never have enough young people wanting an education…” (Albers, 181). It was about the history and traditions here. This particular article talked about Middlebury being one of the first colleges to adopt the idea of a coeducational institution. In 1883, this made them the first in the New England area to accept this idea (History & Traditions). This was in the middle of the Women’s Rights Movement (1848-1920).
